How to Use This Calculator
- Select your substrate type — this auto-fills the typical initial moisture content. Hardwood fuel pellets are the most common at ~8%.
- Adjust initial moisture if you’ve measured your specific batch (see below for how to measure).
- Set your target moisture — 65% is standard for most gourmet mushroom species. Lion’s mane prefers 60–63%, oysters tolerate up to 68%.
- Enter your desired final weight — this is the total hydrated substrate weight per bag or batch. A typical 5 lb fruiting block is about 2.3 kg.
- Read your recipe — weigh out the dry substrate amount, then add the calculated water.
How to Measure Initial Moisture Content
Don’t trust the manufacturer’s label? Here’s how to measure the actual moisture content of your substrate:
- Weigh a sample — take 100–200g of your dry substrate and record the weight precisely. Call this the wet weight.
- Dry it completely — spread the sample on a baking sheet and place in an oven at 100°C (212°F) for 24 hours. Alternatively, use a food dehydrator at maximum temperature for 12+ hours.
- Weigh again — record the bone-dry weight. Call this the dry weight.
- Calculate — Moisture content (%) = ((wet weight − dry weight) / wet weight) × 100
Example: You weigh 150g of hardwood pellets. After 24 hours at 100°C, they weigh 138g. Moisture = ((150 − 138) / 150) × 100 = 8%.
Why 65% Moisture?
Most wood-loving gourmet mushrooms (oyster, shiitake, lion’s mane, king oyster, chestnut) fruit best when the substrate moisture is between 60–68%. At 65%, you’re in the sweet spot — enough water for healthy mycelial growth without creating the anaerobic conditions that invite bacterial contamination.
If your substrate is too dry (below 55%), mycelium will slow dramatically and may stall entirely. If too wet (above 72%), you’ll see soggy substrate, bacterial blotch, and poor pinning.
Substrate-Specific Tips
Hardwood Fuel Pellets
The most popular substrate base for commercial growers. Pellets start at ~8% moisture and expand 3-4x their volume when hydrated. When mixed with water, they break apart into fine sawdust. Many growers use a 50:50 masters mix (pellets + soy hulls) for optimal nutrition and yields.
Straw
Wheat or oat straw is a classic substrate for oyster mushrooms. It typically arrives at 10-15% moisture. Straw is usually pasteurized (not sterilized) by soaking in hot water at 65-80°C for 1-2 hours. The squeeze test works well — properly hydrated straw should release a few drops when squeezed firmly.
Soy Hulls
An excellent nitrogen supplement, often mixed with hardwood pellets. Soy hulls arrive at ~10% moisture. They absorb water quickly and can become overly saturated — measure carefully. Soy hull mixes tend to run slightly wetter, so some growers target 62-63% final moisture.
Coco Coir
Popular for Pholiota adiposa (chestnut mushroom) and as a casing layer. Compressed coco coir bricks expand dramatically when hydrated. Initial moisture varies widely (10-20%) depending on storage conditions. Always measure your specific batch.
Fresh Sawdust
If you’re sourcing sawdust directly from a mill, expect 30-50% moisture content depending on the wood species and how long it’s been sitting. Fresh sawdust from hardwoods (maple, oak, beech) is ideal for shiitake and lion’s mane. Always confirm the wood species — avoid softwoods (cedar, pine) as they contain antifungal compounds.
