Understanding Spawn Rates

The spawn rate is the percentage of spawn relative to your total substrate weight. It's one of the most important variables in mushroom cultivation — it directly affects colonization speed, contamination risk, and your cost per block.

Higher vs. Lower Spawn Rates

Higher spawn rates (12-20%) mean faster colonization, lower contamination risk, and quicker time to fruiting. The trade-off is higher spawn cost per block. This is ideal for beginners, contamination-prone environments, or when speed matters.

Lower spawn rates (5-8%) reduce your spawn cost per block but require cleaner technique and longer colonization times. Experienced commercial growers with clean rooms often use lower rates to maximize their spawn budget. A 2% difference in spawn rate across 1,000 blocks adds up significantly.

Grain Spawn vs. Sawdust Spawn

Grain spawn (rye, wheat, millet) has more nutrient density per gram and more inoculation points when broken up. It colonizes substrate faster at the same weight. Most commercial growers prefer grain spawn for its speed and reliability.

Sawdust spawn is less nutrient-dense, so you need more of it (hence higher recommended rates). However, it's cheaper to produce, mixes more evenly into sawdust-based substrates, and some growers prefer it for outdoor log/bed applications.
